We’re using a new resource this Christmas season. Most years we start our mornings by singing Christmas Carols. This year it hasn’t exactly happened, yet. Thankfully we still have plenty of time to continue our holiday tradition.

So this year rather than just singing Christmas Carols I wanted to give the kids some background information about why these hymns are important, how they fit into the Christmas season, who wrote them and when, and how they came about. Christmas Carols for Kid’s Heart (Hymns for a Kid’s Heart, Vol. 3) fits perfectly!

This book reads like a devotional. The author tells the Christmas story in a variety of different ways and includes information on angels, John the Baptist, customs and historical details during that time, Simeon, prophesy, the magi, the manger, Bethlehem, and much more. It also contains some information about the writers of some of the lyrics and music. Each song is also on the accompanying CD. I love that the lyrics are included along with a memory verse suggestion and a prayer. I’m very impressed and excited to use this book. I think my family will learn a lot and enjoy it at the same time. I think it will fit well with some of our other December traditions.

This book actually reminded me that I wanted to spend some time this year with my children memorizing the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke. I’ve printed out Luke 2: 1-20 and I’ve assigned the kids different portions so it reads like a script. I’ve even assigned myself some verses. I’m looking forward to surprising my husband on Christmas Eve with all the children reciting the Christmas Story. I think it will make for a fun new tradition, a gift they can keep in their hearts.
