The Mark of the King by Jocelyn Green(affiliate link) is simply riveting. It takes place in the early 1700’s during the time France is trying to colonize the Louisiana territory. The book drew me in from the beginning when one of the main characters, Julianne, is attending a birth during which her client dies. Shockingly, she’s then imprisoned, forced to marry and sent to the wild Louisiana territory. The only upside she sees is that she’s no longer in prison and hopes to find her brother who she believes is also in Louisiana.

This is the first book of Jocelyn’s I’ve read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I must confess that I love books with a midwifery component, so that was a big plus for me. I’ve had 3 of my 6 children with a midwife so books like this simply fascinate me. And it just so happens that one of my children is studying this time period in general, so I love finding historical fiction books that I can enjoy alongside my children.

I was encouraged by Julianne’s perseverance as she endures many hardships. My heart repeatedly broke for her while reading this book. I don’t think I’ve felt this much compassion for a character since the Mark of the Lion series. And I loved all the interesting twists and turns. It really kept me engaged. My only disappointment was when the book ended because I just wasn’t ready to leave these characters. I’ll definitely be checking out her other books!
